Research

Biometrics

I work with biometric recognition since 2005, having experience in recognizing individuals through different traits, such as faces, fingerprints, and ears. In 2007, my work received the best undergraduate research award at the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Graphics and Image Processing (SIBGRAPI). In 2014, my doctoral thesis received the third-best thesis award at the Brazilian Computer Society Congress (CSBC).

3D Reconstruction

I designed and developed 3D reconstruction tools for biometric and cultural heritage preservation purposes. In the field of biometrics, my work corroborated neuropsychology works by quantitatively showing that half-frontal face images have more information than their frontal or profile versions. I also worked in scanning statues from a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and constructing digital models to support preservation and restoration efforts.

Deep Learning

Deep learning is my most recent interest in research and competition. I teamed up with other researchers to participate in different challenges. Some noticeable results include a third-place in IARPA's Functional Map of the World challenge on satellite image understanding, a second-place on Intel's Movidius Challenge to run deep networks on the Neural Compute Stick, and another second-place in the Unconstrained Ear Recognition Challenge 2019. I recently received prizes for the best weekly and monthly ideas in the European Space Agency's COVID-19 Custom Script Contest and the Best Contribution award during the competition's upscaling phase.
